This map is based on the work of Claudius Ptolemy who
is responsible for our use of lines of latitude and longitude on maps.
Ptolemy also aligned maps in the traditional format with north on top.
Note that this is a topographical map showing mountains and rivers, as
well as many of the nomadic and more settled tribes of this area between
the Caspian Sea and the Ganges and Imaum or Tian Shan mountains of
Central Asia.On the next page, you'll see another map from Ptolemy
going further eastward, but still covering territory on which the
Scythians lived.
